The MET faculty team has extensive experience as academics and telecommunications professionals. The team is complemented by a wide variety of guest lecturers from our business sponsors. These lecturers bring powerful insights to reinforce the key themes of the program. In 2003, we introduced our first Executive-in-Residence, and in 2005 we introduced our Architects-in-Residence.


Alberto Leon-Garcia Director, MET Program
Professor, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering

Al Leon-GarciaProfessor Leon-Garcia is a Fellow of the IEEE "For contributions to multiplexing and switching of integrated services traffic". He received the 2006 Thomas Eadie Medal in Communications from the Royal Society of Canada for his work on the design of multigeneration networks. Professor Leon-Garcia holds the Jeffrey Skoll Chair in Computer Networks and Innovation. He was founder and CTO of AcceLight Networks in Ottawa which developed leading edge optical switching equipment. He holds several patents and has published research extensively in the areas of switch architecture and traffic management. Professor Leon-Garcia is recognized as an innovator in networking education. In 1986, he led the development of the University of Toronto - Northern Telecom Network Engineering Program. He has also led the development of the Master of Engineering in Telecommunications program, and the communications and networking options in the undergraduate computer engineering program. He is author of the leading textbooks: Probability and Random Processes for Electrical Engineering, and Communication Networks: Fundamental Concepts and Key Architecture.

Baochun Li University of Toronto
Professor, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering

Baochun LiProfessor Li received his B.Eng. degree in 1995 from Department of Computer Science and Technology, Tsinghua University, China, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in 1997 and 2000 from the Department of Computer Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Since 2000, he has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto, where he is currently an Associate Professor. He holds the Nortel Networks Junior Chair in Network Architecture and Services since October 2003, and the Bell University Laboratories Endowed Chair in Computer Engineering since August 2005. In 2000, he was the recipient of the IEEE Communications Society Leonard G. Abraham Award in the Field of Communications Systems. His research interests include application-level Quality of Service provisioning, wireless and overlay networks. He is a senior member of IEEE, and a member of ACM. Joseph D'Cruz Strategic Management
Director, Global Executive MBA, Rotman School of Management

Joe D'CruzProfessor D'Cruz is widely regarded as one of Canada's leading experts on international competitiveness. He teaches Business Strategy and International Business at the Rotman School of Management. He has also taught at IMD International in Lausanne, Switzerland. He consults widely with multinational corporations in the areas of global strategy and international operations. He is the co-author (with Professor Rugman) of the Kodak series of studies on Canada's international competitiveness and winner of the Touche Ross Award for the best article in the Business Quarterly entitled "The Globalization of Manufacturing" (with Professor Fleck). He has lectured extensively in Europe, the Asia Pacific region and the U.S. on the subjects of international business strategy and globalization. He has advised the federal government on ways to enhance the international competitiveness of Canadian industry and has served on the Steering Committee of the Prosperity Initiative. His current research is focused on the globalization of the telecommunications industry, the benchmarking of international competitiveness, and strategies for flagship firms.

Yuk-wha Li Director, Executive Development Program

Yuk-wha Li

Since 1999, Yuk-wha Li has lectured in the Master Degree of Engineering in Telecommunications Program and also in Telecommunications Management Certificate Program, both at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the University of Toronto . Her lectures and researches focus on Telecom Industry Trends, Dynamics and Analysis with emphasis on impact of Telecom/ IT/ Internet/Cable Convergence. She was on MET Advisory Board representing Nortel from 2001-2003. After 25 years with Nortel, Yuk-wha Li had decided to leave the company in March 2005, where she was Director, Market Intelligence & Strategy working out of its Corporate Headquarters in Brampton , Ontario . She was responsible for conducting global telecom market and competitive analysis, with emphasis on the Asia Pacific market region. She was also involved in identifying and evaluating new business opportunities for emerging business segments as well. Born in Shanghai and brought up in Hong Kong , Yuk-wha received her bachelor degree in Computer Science from University of Minnesota in Minneapolis . She obtained her Master of Mathematics degree in Computer Science at University of Waterloo. She joined the technology division of Nortel Networks (Bell Northern Research) as a Member of Scientific Staff in 1980 and stayed in the R&D functions till 1988. Since 1988, she had held various management positions in product management, marketing, business development and strategic planning. Twice in her career, Yuk-wha had stationed in Asia Pacific. She returned to Canada in 1996 and assumed different strategic planning functions in Headquarters.

Jorg Liebeherr University of Toronto
Professor, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering

Jorg LiebeherrProfessor Liebeherr is a Professor and Nortel Chair of Network Architecture and Service in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Toronto. He received the PhD degree in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1991. He had a Postdoc position at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1992. From 1992 until 2005 he was with the Department of Computer Science at the University of Virginia. In 1997-1998 he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Polytechnic University (Brooklyn Poly). He has served on editorial boards of several journals in computer networking, including IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, IEEE Network, and ACM/Springer Multimedia Systems. He was Editor in Chief of IEEE Network from 1999 to 2000. He was elected Member-at-Large of the IEEE Communications Society Board of Governors in 2003-2005, and chair of the IEEE Communications Society Technical Committee on COmputer Communications (TCCC) in 2004-2005. He received an NSF Research Initiation Award in 1993, a UVa Teaching and Technology fellowship in 1995, and an NSF CAREER Award in 1996. He was a Virginia Engineering Foundation (VEF) Faculty Fellow from 2002-2005. He received the TCCC Outstanding Service Award from the IEEE Communications Society in 2006. He co-authored a paper that received the Best Student Paper Award at ACM Sigmetrics 2005. He is a co-author of the textbook Mastering Networks: An Internet Lab Manual, published by Addison-Wesley in 2004. His current research interests are networks with service guarantees and self-organizing peer networks.

Elvino S. Sousa University of Toronto
Professor, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering

Elvino SousaElvino S. Sousa holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and is the Bell University Lab Chair in Computer Engineering with a mandate in wireless communications.  He is the Director of the Wireless Lab, which has undertaken research in spread spectrum systems and CDMA wireless systems for the past 16 years.  His current research interests are in the areas of high-speed CDMA systems, smart antenna systems, software radio, ad-hoc networks, and wireless system concepts for 4th generation networks.  Professor Sousa has been a consultant to industry and governments in the area of wireless systems internationally. He was the Technical Program Chair for PIMRC 95, Vice-Technical Program Chair for Globecom '99, Chair of the IEEE Technical committee on Personal Communications, and has been involved in the technical program committee of numerous international conferences. He has spent sabbatical leaves at Qualcomm and Sony CSL/ATL, where he was the holder of the Sony sabbatical chair.

Sharokh Valaee University of Toronto
Professor, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering

Sharokh ValaeeProfessor Valaee is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto and holds the Nortel Institute Junior Chair of Communication Networks. He is the Director of the Wireless and Internet Research Laboratory (WIRLab) at the University of Toronto. WIRLab is a well-equipped research laboratory that focuses on resource management in wireless and wired networks, with the emphasis on 4G, mesh, vehicular ad hoc, and sensor networks. Dr. Valaee is the Co-Chair for Wireless Communications Symposium of IEEE GLOBECOM 2006, the Editor for IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine special issue on Toward Seamless Internetworking of Wireless LAN and Cellular Networks, and the Editor of Wiley Journal on Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing special issue on Radio Link and Transport Protocol Engineering for Future Generation Wireless Mobile Data Networks. From 1994 to 1995, he was a Research Associate at INRS Telecom, University of Quebec, Montreal, Canada. From 1996 to 2001, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tarbiat Modares University, and in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Sharif University of Technology. During this period, he was also a consultant and project manager on multiple projects in ATM Networks at Iran Telecommunications Research Center, and several private companies.

Chun Cheng Industry Liaison Manager

Chun ChengPrior to joining the MET program in 2003, Chun was the Director of Channel Management at Nortel China where he launched a nationwide Channel Sales program. Born in China and educated in Hong Kong and Canada, Chun received his bachelor degree of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1976. He is a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario and has extensive knowledge and experience in telecom operations, network engineering, sales and marketing. Upon graduation, he joined the Engineering Department of Bell Canada in Toronto, responsible for the network planning and equipment engineering for Area Code 416. In 1990, he joined the Systems Engineering Division of Nortel Networks providing network design services to customers in Latin America. From 1993 to 2002, Chun held a variety of sales and marketing positions with Nortel Asia responsible for business development in Asia Pacific.

Architects-In-Residence

John Chen Newstep Networks
Director of Product Development

John ChenJohn is a founding member of Newstep Networks, a telecommunication software firm and the market and technology leader in providing IMS based solutions, where he is leading a core platform team and responsible for life-cycle product development. Prior to joining Newstep, John worked at March Networks and Nortel Networks and held a number of senior technical and management positions. Earlier, he started his career as a software engineer developing solutions for ICT industry, and continued ever since.

The author of many technical publications, John earned his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Calgary. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and sports.

Jimmy Fan Bell Canada
Network Architect, IP/MPLS Technology Development

Jimmy Fan

Jimmy is currently a Network Architect on the IP/MPLS Network Evolution Team at Bell Canada. His work includes Network Architecture development, New Technology Introduction, and IP/MPLS Technology Strategy Planning. He also worked on Service-Oriented Architectures while in Bell's Enterprise Architecture group. Jimmy holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Waterloo in Systems Design Engineering with Computer Engineering and Management Sciences Options. He later obtained his Master's degree from the University of Toronto in the Master of Engineering in Telecommunications program focusing on wireless communications and industry/technology analysis. He is the first MET alumni to serve as an Architect-in-Residence for the MET program. Prior to this, Jimmy has spent time in Antenna Engineering at the Canadian Space Agency (Ottawa) and Research In Motion (Waterloo), as well as Mobile Applications Engineering at NVIDIA (San Jose).

Kit Fung AlleWin Technologies

Kit Fung

After getting his Ph.D in Coding and Information Theory Kit joined Nortel to design digital echo suppressor and speech compression coders in 1976. He spent the next 26 years in system design, digital switching, network management and packet networks.  In the summers of 1992 and 1996 he took executive business management courses in MIT and Harvard business school to diversify his management skills. Kit was VP for the Enterprise Data division responsible for the Passport data product when he retired in the beginning of 2001 just before the technology bubble bursted.     Kit was invited to lead a freshly formed start up Seaway Networks in Apr 2001 where he went through the most challenging moment in his life trying to raise venture capital funding after the technology train wreck in 2001/2002. Seaway Networks, a content processing and security fabless semiconductor start up was acquired by Freescale Semiconductor (the Motorola semiconductor spin off) in August 2005. He stayed on at Freescale as the Director for the Ottawa Technology Centre to ensure the smooth integration of Seaway into the Freescale corporate structure. He retired from Freescale in August 06 after successfully integrating Seaway into Freescale and meeting all the performance milestones as related to the acquisition.      In the autumn of 06 Kit was trying to fulfill a long broken promise to his wife to clean up the garage. He completed the job just before snow started. As he emerged from his garage he was confronted by a group of engineers from a Wireless start up in stealth mode who wanted to find a CEO to take them to the next round of financing. Aided by their investor Kit was drafted to take on the job two days before Christmas.

Larry Hargrove IBM
Business Development Executive, Global Business Services

Larry is a Business Development Executive within the Telecommunications Industry of IBM's Global Business Services organization.  Larry's role is to help Canadian Service Providers grow their revenues and profits by leveraging IBM's resources to help them create, deliver and manage new services.  Larry's previous responsibilities at IBM included relationship management in the telecommunications industry and marketing management of IBM Canada's e-business hosting businesses.   Prior to joining IBM Larry launched and managed several businesses in the telecommunications industry, including a consulting firm and a long distance telephone company.   Larry holds an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of New Brunswick.

Colman Ho Industry Canada
Director - IP Telecommunications & Security

Colman Ho

Colman Ho is currently Director of IP Telecommunications and Security in the Spectrum, Information Technology and Telecommunications Sector (SITT) of Industry Canada . He is responsible for identifying issues and impacts of emerging telecommunication services and technologies to telecom policies and regulations; and providing advices and recommendations. In addition, Colman manages the Protocol Analysis Lab which focuses on studying and analyzing network and protocol vulnerabilities. Colman's current focus is Voice over IP and Next generation Network (NGN) vulnerabilities.  He is also responsible for the NGN, Security, and other IP standards in fora such as ITU-T, IETF and CITEL. Colman has presented at a wide range of technical conferences and seminars. Colman graduated in 1977 with a B.Sc. (Electrical Engineering) degree and a Master of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) degree in 1983, all from the University of Manitoba . Upon graduation in 1977, he joined Manitoba Telephone System (MTS) as a Transmission Engineer. He was assigned by MTS to work in Telecom Canada for two years as a Network Architecture Advisor to formulate the network evolution strategic plan for the member Canadian telephone companies. Prior to joining Industry Canada in 2001, Colman worked in Nortel for 16 years. During his career in Nortel, Colman held progressive senior positions with increasing responsibilities in various work areas, including telecommunication regulation and standards, professional services, design and prototyping, system architecture and network planning, strategic planning, and technical marketing. He has extensive knowledge and expertise in IP Telephony Architecture and Protocols, Service Architecture, Network and Protocol Security, and Network Protocol Design.

Jim Kozij MTS Allstream
Director, Network Architecture and Transport

Jim KozijJim Kozij is currently the Director of Network Architecture and Transport at Allstream. He is responsible for leading the development of the network architecture, ensuring that the network vision is communicated throughout the company, and managing the new technology selection process. Jim is also directly responsible for the deployment of new transport network technology at Allstream. Jim graduated from Concordia University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree and in 1991 he obtained a Certificate in Accounting and Finance from Ryerson. After graduating from Concordia, Jim joined CP Telecommunications (an Allstream predecessor company) as a radio implementation engineer and over time has progressed through various positions in the company. He has been involved in numerous new technology deployments in support of frame relay, Internet, Ethernet, satellite, and IP VPN services and has worked with government organizations on key initiatives such as CANARIE. He enjoys the challenges associated with the deployment of leading edge technologies and is always attempting to properly balance the requirements of family with those of work.

Shuming Li TELUS
Director of Planning & Engineering

Shuming LiShuming is the Director of Planning & Engineering in TELUS Network & Operations department at TELUS. He is responsible for planning function of TELUS nation-wide Voice & NGN networks and associated supporting network systems. Shuming is a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario . Shuming received his Bachelor and Masters of Engineering in Telecommunication degrees from Dalian University of Technology, P.R. China. After graduation, Shuming worked for China Telecom in different areas, including as a lecturer in university, as an engineer and senior engineer in manufacturing and network planning & engineering areas. Shuming also held progressive management roles in his career with China Telecom. In 1997, Shuming worked for the University of Sussex, U.K. as a Research Fellow in the School of Engineering with focus on the research on ATM. In the summer of 1998 Shuming moved to Canada and joined Northern Telephone Ltd. as an engineer. Shuming has held progressive positions in Sprint Canada since he joined the company at the beginning of 2000 as a senior data network engineer, solution architect, network architect, Manager of network & architecture group and Senior Manager of Technology Planning group. Shuming joined TELUS in October 2006 in his current role. Shuming has also been involved with the MET program since 2003 by providing guidance to MET students. Shuming has published many engineering design documents in his work with various companies, and two papers at international conferences in his telecommunications career.

Lin Lin Nortel
Senior Engineer, Multimedia Applications

Lin Lin

Lin Lin is a senior engineer in the Multimedia Applications group at Nortel. Over the past 18 years, he has worked at various levels of abstraction including hardware design, digital signal processing, embedded systems, storage, telecom middleware, speech applications, and web development, with an emphasis on unified messaging and communications. Most recently, he has been working on voice over IP, video over IP, and orchestration in service-oriented architectures. Outside of Nortel, he is involved in an effort to design a common phonetic writing system for interchange among the world's natural languages. Lin did his BASc in computer engineering at the University of Toronto in the division of engineering science. He has been working on computational fluid dynamics at the department of physics, where he received an MSc. He is a PEng in Ontario.

Ping Lin Nortel
Senior Technical Advisor

Ping Lin

Ping Lin is a Senior Technical Advisor with the Enterprise & SMB Communication Systems (ESCS) and Multimedia Applications (MA) groups at Nortel, currently working in the areas of IP telephony call server architecture and technical strategy/cross-product architecture for the Nortel Application Center suite (which includes contact center, unified messaging, interactive voice response and multimedia conferencing products). She has been in the computer and communications industries since 1985. Prior to Nortel, she worked at IBM for 10 years in product development and leadership positions in several areas, including computer systems and network security, distributed computing, compiler technology, and internationalization/localization. She obtained a Doctor of Philosophy and a Master of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering, and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering Science, Computer Option, all from the University of Toronto.

Nalin Mistry Nortel
Application Team Leader, CTO Open Innovation Lab

Nalin Mistry

Nalin Mistry has worked for Nortel for 19 years in various roles - ASIC design, Hardware design, Software design, System Architecture, Senior Manager and PLM. He is currently leading an Application team within the CTO Open Innovation Lab. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering from Leicester University (UK) and is an IEE Charted Engineer.

Shaukat Mulla Rogers Wireless Inc.
Director of Planning and Engineering for Wireless Data

Shaukat MullaShaukat Mulla is the Director for Planning and Engineering for Wireless Data at Rogers Wireless Inc. His responsibilities include planning, designing and implementation of the wireless data infrastructure to meet usage demand and application functionality requirements. He ensures that end to end customer experience is efficient, cost effective and meets or exceeds customer expectations. Shaukat has been in communications since 1974. He has been responsible for wireless data at Rogers since 1990. Shaukat has led teams including:

- Designed, engineered and deployed the Rogers Mobitex, GPRS data and public Wi-Fi networks.
- Design and integration of corporate applications and Blackberry Service
- Consumer applications.

Ella Sherman MTS Allstream
Senior Manager of OSS and Enhanced Applications Group

Ella ShermanElla Sherman is currently the Senior Manager of OSS & Enhanced Applications group in the Technology Development department at MTS Allstream. She is responsible for the design and development of applications such as Network-Resident Security and Content Filtering, Unified Messaging and Performance reporting. She leads the process of selection of new technology platforms, their certification within the company and ensuring that new platforms are integrated seamlessly in the company's operational organizations and processes. Ella graduated from Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics with a Bachelor of Engineering degree. After graduating from university, she worked in the Research & Development Institute of Radio in Moscow as an engineer of satellite communications, developing satellite communication systems for Earth stations within the international satellite network "Intersputnik" in both C-band and Ku-band. Later on, she worked in the Network Development department in Bezeq, the Israeli National Telecommunications provider, planning and designing international telecommunication networks. After Ella moved to Canada in 1996, she soon joined MTS Allstream, formerly known as AT&T Canada. During her years in the company, she was engaged in various leading edge technology and services development projects, such as Frame Relay, ATM, MPLS based IP-VPN, Network based security, Identity Management and others. Ella is a member of Professional Engineers of Ontario.

Mark Woollam Nortel Networks
Solutions Architect

Mark Woollam Mark Woollam is presently the Nortel Networks Solutions Architect assigned to work exclusively with Bell Canada and affiliates. This position was created between the Bell Canada CIO/CTO (Eugene Roman) and Nortel CTO (Greg Mumford) to provide dedicated focus on network solutions for Bell Canada, Bell West, and Aliant. In addition, Mark is the Nortel prime for the Bell Canada - Nortel Networks IP Telephony Innovation Centre in Ottawa and a member of Nortel's Strategic Technology and Business Planning group. Prior to taking this position in October 2001, Mark has held several senior positions within Nortel Networks in various locations. His experience includes design, product management, network solutions, and business development for voice, data, and video initiatives. He is a Professional Engineer and holds B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Queen's University. Mark's current focus includes Broadband, Voice over IP, Wireless, and Data Networking for enterprise and consumer networks. His key interest is to provide a balanced focus on business and technology to drive new opportunities in the market.

Nikos Katinakis Ericsson Canada
VP Sales

Nikos KatinakisMr. Katinakis is currently responsible for a large part of the Ericsson business in the Canadian market. Until recently, he was the CTO of Ericsson Canada and responsible for the complete Ericsson portfolio of products for the market. He has held progressively senior management positions within R&D, Product Line Management, Technical Sales Support and Operations and had the opportunity to spend time in short and long term assignments around the world both with Ericsson and several other companies such as Philips Electronics and Info-Quest. He holds several patents in the areas of personal computers and cellular communications and is a graduate of McGill University. Nikos' key interest is in the "business of technology", finding and understanding the business opportunity for the right technology in Telecom and IT.

David Hudson Nortel
VP Portfolio Management, Chief Technology Office

David HudsonDavid is responsible for Nortel Networks' overall product protfolio within the Cheif Technology Office. Since coming to Nortel Networks in 1988, David has held increasingly responsible management positions in both engineering and product line management. In previous roles, David has worked in all of Nortel Networks' product lines, including enterprise, mobility and metro. David holds the Nortel seat on a number of university advisory boards. David received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Ontario. David graduated from the Systems Design program at the University of Waterloo and his graduate work focused on pattern recognition and signal processing applied to earth resources imagery. In addition to his responsibilities with Nortel Networks, David is an active member in his community. David leads a children's program at his local church.
