The Certificate in Networking program is offered as a part-time program by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. It is fully integrated with the Master of Engineering in Telecommunications (MET) full-time and part-time programs. Classes are held on Fridays and Saturdays alternating weeks from September to April. It is offered as an 8- to 12-month program depending on the option you choose. The two options are listed below: Option A: consists of the Immersion in Networking & Telecommunications component of the MET program - the four core courses. Option B: consists of the Immersion in Networking & Telecommunications component of the MET program - the four core courses and the project. Immersion in Networking and Telecommunications (Options A & B) The
student becomes immersed in the study of networks and telecommunications.
The student is presented with an integrated set of modules
that covers the array of fundamental concepts that are relevant
to the design and operation of computer and telecommunication
networks and services. These concepts range from network theory,
technology and products, to issues in the design of network-based
services, including strategic planning and regulatory and
competitive environment. The student has the opportunity to
apply these concepts in laboratories, tutorials, case studies,
and a major team case study. Taken as a whole The immersion component is arranged as a series of 1.5 hour modules each taught by a faculty or industry expert. Faculty members are drawn from the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science, the Faculty of Law, and the Joseph L. Rotman Centre for Management. Industry experts are selected because of their expertise in state-of-the art technology or leading-edge issues. The modules in the immersion term are grouped into four core networking graduate courses that have been created specifically for this program. The Project (Option B) The project component of the program is a project of four- to six-months duration that provides the student with the opportunity to perform and document a reasonably comprehensive project. Each student will undertake a project on a topic relevant to networking or telecommunications, usually as part of a small team. The projects may be undertaken in the university or in industry, however, in all cases will be supervised by a faculty member. Each student's project work will be evaluated on an individual basis.
